According to the website, in a meeting with Mahdi Karroubi, Mahmoud’s wife retold the painful story of her husband’s tragic death. According to Mrs Raeisi Najafi her husband, a worker, normally returned home early, but on the night of June 15th he rang the doorbell very late. Upon his arrival she was met with the sight of her severely wounded husband. “He told me that while returning from work he had witnessed people running away and armed individuals equipped with batons were beating people and following anyone that was ble to escape,” she says.
According to the report, as Mr Raeisi Najafi was walking home from Azadi square, he was captured by these forces and was subsequently beaten senseless even though he had tried to explain to them that had not participated in any protest and was just returning from work.
“As I became conscious again, I found myself in a moving vehicle full of people who were either dead or unconscious like me,” he had told his wife. After hitting on the walls of the compartment he was in, he was able to create enough noise to make his drivers stop the car. After begging to be released, the agents threw him out of the vehicle and left the place.
The report states that Mr. Saeidi Najafi found himself in the Hakimiyeh neighbourhood of Tehran and was able to reach his house with the aid of fellow citizens who had found him abandoned on the street.
“His body was wounded, his legs severely swollen, his arm paralysed and his stomach inflated,” his wife explains. They did not check into a hospital as they were afraid of the reaction of government officials if they did decide to do so.
However after a deterioration of Mr Saeidi Najafi’s health the family decided to take him to a hospital after 10 days.
At the hospital, it was concluded that Mr Saeidi Najafi had gunshot wounds too but doctors asked the family to check into the hospital the next day. Sadly, he could not make it through and passed away next morning.
According to his father, officials refused to hand over his son’s body even days after his death and only decided to do so when the family promised not to launch any complaints.
“Out of concern for possible problems for the family we didn’t mention anything about the cause of death to anyone, and we still have this fear,” admitted Mr Saeidi Najafi.
As stated by the report, addressing Mahdi Karroubi, the father of the victim of this heartbreaking story said, “After learning that you were investigating the cases of those who were killed or wounded in the post-election unrest, we found the confidence to come and ask you not to let the blood of our son be spilt in vain.”
In the end, Karroubi reaffirmed his support for the families of those who had been victimised during the events that followed the June elections: “I will do my utmost to support the grieving families including the family of the deceased Raeisi Najafi and I will try to [help them] regain their rights.”
It should be noted that the family of Mr Raeisi Najafi and Rahmatollah Bigdeli a member of the central committee of the National Trust Party were also present in this meeting.
Following the results presidential elections on June 12th, millions of Iranians marched in protest from Revolution Square to Freedom Square in Tehran. It is believed that many lost their lives or were wounded on that day due to a clampdown by security forces. The true scale of the killings is still a mystery.
