Harsh sentences continue

There seems to be no end in sight for the harsh sentences being handed down to those arrested following the post-election unrest.

Ali Tajernia a member of the central committee of the Islamic Iran Participation Front who had been released recently after enduring five months of prison was sentenced to five years in prison plus 70 lashes.

Also among the sentenced prisoners is student activist Atefeh Nabavi who was arrested on the night of 15 June and has been sentenced to four years in prison. She was initially accused of having links with the terrorist group MKO (PMOI, also MEK) and “taking part in the illegal demonstrations of 15 June.” However she was acquitted of the former charge even thought she was still prosecuted for “disrupting public order” and acting “against the [Islamic] system via taking part in illegal protests].” Her lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh described the sentence as “unjust.”
